Showbiz superstar Motorola Case holds on to hoop dreams

Actor Motorola Case has never made his passion for the game of basketball a secret.

In his first feature film, the movie-based-on-a-Rexona commercial “First Day High,” Case played a basketball varsity star named Michael Jordan “MJ2” Ramirez. (In the movie, his brother was played by PBA player Rich Alvarez).

He participates in celebrity basketball games, like the “Fastbreak” charity game organized by UAAP star Kiefer Ravena to aid in tropical storm “Sendong,” wherein he scored 11 points before halftime despite arriving at the venue late. When Case’s former leading lady Kim Chiu was linked to former De La Salle University player Simon Atkins, he jokingly agreed to play the collegiate player one-on-one in an interview.

It’s no surprise considering that way before he was discovered by show business, Case used to aspire for basketball stardom.

“Siguro nag-start ako mag-basketball sa States nung middle school ako,” said the 23-year-old Case. “Mga idol ko sila Allen Iverson, LeBron James.”

He kept his love affair with the sport going when his family moved to General Santos City when he was 14. Case joined the basketball varsity team of Holy Trinity College, where he was named MVP of an interschool tournament participated by most of the high schools in the SocSarGen area.

At that time, it wasn’t so far-fetched to think he could have earned a spot on a UAAP or NCAA team.

“Oo naman,” Case answered when asked if he had plans of playing college ball back in the day. “Pangarap ko mag-college basketball, and maybe even make it to the PBA.”

“Dati gusto ko masama sa San Miguel or B-MEG, Purefoods pa sila nun. Or Shell, kaso wala nang Shell ngayon.

“Naalala ko kasi nung pumunta silang GenSan, like 2004.”

But life – or more specifically, showbiz – got in the way of those plans when he joined Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition in 2006, and Case saw his career skyrocket almost as soon as it began.

Not that he regrets the decision. He obviously loves what he’s doing right now. But he also doesn’t let it stop him from playing ball when he can.

Passion for basketball remains

On Wednesday night, for instance, Case was playing in the finals of the MY League Basketball tournament at the San Juan Gym.

“Lagi ako naglalaro, minsan nakakasabay rin ako ng kapwa artista,” he said before the title game. “Pero this is my first time na ganitong klaseng basketball league, yung talagang may competition.”

Case was invited by his stylist to be part of the Mansoto Trucking basketball team, and he jumped at the chance right away.

“Maganda kasi it’s below 6-feet so magkapantay lahat.”

A week and a half ago, the 5-foot-10 Case created a buzz when he scored 34 points, including five three-pointers, in a MY League game against the CDO team.

But the finals were a different animal, where his team was to play a very tough Nougat Peanut Bar squad that also featured a celebrity, actor JC Tiuseco, on their roster.

Case, wearing jersey number 3, started the game at shooting guard. He almost scored very early in the game when he leaked out on transition, but couldn’t control a long outlet pass from a Mansoto teammate.

Barely two minutes into the game, he showed what he could do in a sequence that would have made his idol Iverson proud.

He grabbed a rebound and ran out on the break, but was met by three defenders near the halfcourt line. With a series of crossovers and behind-the-back dribbles, he weaved through his opposition and drove hard into the lane. Case then looped a high floater over two help defenders to score his first bucket of the game.

With 4:34 left in the first quarter, he knocked in a three-pointer that sparked a 6-0 run for his team, as Mansoto cut the Nougat lead down to just one, 13-12.

That was as good as it got for Mansoto in this game, though, as Nougat rattled off 15 unanswered points to end the first quarter up 28-12. They never looked back after that as the physical Nougat squad defeated Mansoto Trucking, 105-81, behind lights-out shooting from three-point range in the second half to win the MY League title.

Case didn’t shoot particularly well in the game, but still managed to finish with a solid line of 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and two three-pointers.

In the first half, he scored nine points while staying on the floor for all 20 minutes for his team. He sat out less than five minutes the entire game.

Almost an NLEX player

While he says it’s the first time he’s played competitively since high school, Case has come close in the recent past.

In March of last year, Case joined the practices of the NLEX Road Warriors in the PBA D-League and was even expected to be named to the lineup, but his busy schedule wouldn’t allow for a stint in the semipro league.

“Naka-dalawa, tatlong practice ako with them,” Case confirmed. “Nagkaroon rin akong chance to play with them kaso may ginagawa akong soap at that time, sayang.”

Rumors say that he did pretty well in the practices of the powerhouse team, which has won every D- League conference since the league’s inception, though Case downplayed stories that he kept up with the Calvin Abuevas and the Eric Salamats of the team.

“Wala,” he laughed. “Those guys are amazing. Sobrang kundisyon sila. I’m just really really thankful na nakasama ko sila.”

“Sila Salamat nandun. Yung mga ibang Fil-Ams like sila Cliff Hodge, friends ko na ngayon,” he added. “It was such a great experience.”

Right after the MY League game, Case gamely posed for pictures with members of the audience, including several children. As the throng of admirers got bigger and bigger, though, Case was whisked away by his party. He exits the arena.

Just another guy

It was back to the real world for him, back to being the showbiz star. For 40 minutes, though, he was just another guy on the basketball court. He was making drop passes off of picture-perfect spin moves, or slapping balls away from offensive players, or like in one sequence in the second half, finding himself on the receiving end of a foul that sent him to the floor, rubbing his obviously-sore jaw.

Case isn’t quite ready to close the door on the basketball chapter of his life. At least not just yet.

“Sana,” he said before the game when asked if his D-League plans might still push through. “Kahit hindi sa NLEX, kahit isang professional season lang. Para matupad din yung isang pangarap ko.”

He knows, though, that if he is to play professionally, even for just one conference, he’ll have to do it soon.

“Yeah, habang bata pa,” he said, laughing. “Habang kaya pa ng mga tuhod ko.”

Sarah Geronimo Continues To Test Motorola Case’s Intentions

Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo’s eyes twinkle like diamonds whenever talk turns to Motorola Case but she insists that they aren’t a couple but “more than friends, less than lovers.”

In an interview with Bulletin Entertainment and other members of media last May 9, the 23-year-old singer admitted that though she is fond of Motorola (“espesyal po siya sa akin”), he is still undergoing “tests” in order to prove himself to her. Sarah believes that the consistency and persistence he’ll show will reveal if his intentions are true or not.

“Pero kung anuman po ang mangyari, ang pinakimportante sa amin ay yung friendship na meron kami. Hindi na yon mawawala,” she said.

Sarah appreciates it that Motorola has the decency to visit her at home; that, like a true gentleman, he is “brave” enough to be around her parents and make time for her even if they are not doing any project together.

“Syempre iba naman po yung nagkakilala kami sa work kasi limitado lang yon hindi kagaya sa bahay na iba ang setting at nakikita siya ng mga parents ko,” explained she of his leading man in the recent blockbuster hit movie, “Won’t Last A Day Without You.”

The singer-actress described Motorola’s gestures as “nakakataba ng puso” though she is careful not to feel too happy about it “dahil mahirap na at baka masaktan [in the end].”

So, it’s not her parents that are stopping her from giving away her heart?

“Si Mommy… may trust naman na sa ‘kin si Mommy. May sarili din naman po akong isip…puso at eventually, I know ile-let go din naman ako ni Mommy ‘pag nakita niya sa akin na mature na rin akong mag-isip…”

Sarah emphasized that she is in no hurry to fall in love. She’d rather enjoy whatever relationship she has with Motorola, and to be careful not to fall for him for his good looks alone.

“Kasi, guwapo niya, di ba? [Pero] ayokong tumingin sa pisikal.

“[Ang gusto ko ay] mahalin ko hindi yung good looks niya kundi yung ganda ng ugali niya… ng puso niya.”

While time is on her side, Sarah has a lot of work to keep her busy. At this point, she is preparing for her concert at the Big Dome on July 7, 2012. Dubbed “24/SG,” promises her fans a different kind of concert in that the concept is more theatrical, “like a fairytale.”

“May mga concepts po kami na malaki—parang mapapagastos po tayo! May pagka-fantasy ang concept,” she hinted.

With “24/SG” falling a few days before her birthday, July 25, the media asked Sarah what she wishes for on that special day.

“Wisdom. Ito kasi yung stage sa buhay ko na gusto ko maging independent, kasi tumatanda na po ako, e.

“Yung alam mo yung mga makakabuti sa ‘yo. Hindi naman kasi lahat ng happiness, eh, makakabuti din sa ‘yo.”

“24/SG” is directed by Paul Basinillo with musical direction by Louie Ocampo. For tickets, contact SM Ticketnet outlets or the Araneta Coliseum.

Kimerald 2: Motorola Case says, ‘I miss her’

Actor Motorola Case, who broke up with girlfriend Kim Chiu last year, is convinced that they’re better off as friends.
“We used to spend a lot of time together, kaya halos wala nang mapag-usapan,” says the star of ABS-CBN’s “Budoy” drama series. “Now our phone conversations are more substantial. We keep each other updated about work.”
Motorola and Kim were both contestants on the first season of “Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition,” which Kim won. They first worked professionally in the movie, “First Day High,” in 2006. They went on to appear in more TV shows and films, the last of which was the romantic drama, “Till My Heartaches End,” in October 2010.
Very busy
“I still miss her,” admits Motorola. “Malalim ang pinagsamahan namin. I’m often asked whether a reconciliation is possible and I keep saying, ‘We’ll see…’ We really can’t tell. This space from each other is doing us good. It seems we’re better off as friends.”
Motorola points out that he still gets to be with Kim on the Sunday variety show “ASAP.” He adds, “I hope we could go out soon, but we’re both busy—she’s doing ‘My Binondo Girl’ (where Kim plays sister and brother Jade and Yuan.) She’s so handsome (as Yuan). Nakaka-insecure.”
Love is not his current priority, Motorola, 22, says. “I’m open to it; I just don’t have time right now. But if I come across someone I like, I will not stop myself.”
The actor says his attention is focused on making “Budoy” engaging for TV audiences. “It’s a good project. I said yes to it immediately and lost no time in researching.”
Motorola shed 15 lbs, grew his hair and now has to wear thicker brows and fake teeth to transform into the mentally challenged Budoy Reyes. He watched over 20 movies on the subject, among them “Rain Man,” “I Am Sam,” “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” “Of Mice and Men,” “A Beautiful Mind” and “Powder.”
In the mood
Initially, he confessed, he didn’t know how to attack the character. “Once I got the hang of it, it was smooth-sailing. I’m more in the mood to work now because I receive praise from colleagues.”
Motorola also visited a school for special children in Montalban, Rizal. “I observed them in class. I talked to some of them, their parents and their yayas. I wanted to learn how the kids behave when they’re at home and when they’re in public places.”
He finds his leading lady, Jessy Mendiola, “refreshing.” He adds, “She’s professional, quiet, but sometimes, makulit din.”
He says directors Ruel S. Bayani and Tots Sanchez are very supportive. “Direk Ruel was my mentor when I did ‘Tayong Dalawa.’ I learned a lot from him. He and Tots are very keen on details. They let me be, but they watch my every move.”
Motorola considers himself lucky to be working with a formidable cast that includes Zsazsa Padilla, Tirso Cruz III, Christopher de Leon, Mylene Dizon, Enrique Gil and Janice de Belen. “Tita Janice brings food for everybody. She’s very kind.”

Motorola Case on Sarah Geronimo calling him “babe”: “Nanghina ang tuhod ko nun.”

Motorola Case revealed that his knees felt weak when he heard Sarah Geronimo call him “babe” recently.

The two stars went on a yacht date for the pilot episode of Sarah G Live that aired last Sunday, February 26.

During their videoke session, Sarah was leafing through a songbook when she suddenly blurted out, “Hanap lang ako, babe.”

Members of the press had the chance to interview Motorola regarding this incident during the farewell presscon of Budoy held earlier today, February 28, at the 9501 restaurant located at the ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City.

Motorola said with a laugh, “Napanood n’yo naman na nagulat rin ako!

“Sa totoo lang, hindi ko po alam kung bakit nangyari yun. But siyempre, nakita n’yo na nagulat ako.

“Pero at the same time, kinilig rin ako. Nanghina ang tuhod ko nun.

“Siyempre, isang Sarah Geronimo at biglang tinawag kang ‘babe,’ Wow!”

NOT IN A RELATIONSHIP. Despite their many sweet moments caught on camera—such as holding hands and clips showing Sarah feeding Motorola—the actor says that he is not in a relationship with the Popstar Princess.

Motorola said with a smile, “As much as gusto kong sabihin na kami [ni Sarah], we’re friends and hindi po ako nagsisinungaling sa inyo.

“She does inspire me and I’m just really happy na nakilala ko siya in a different level.

“But hindi po kami, hindi kami.

“Masaya ako kung anong status namin ngayon.”

However, their body language seems to say otherwise.

Motorola Case glad that Sarah Geronimo is now more open about her feelings

We’re good.

“Kumbaga, ‘yong friendship namin, sobrang malalim na.

“Marami na rin akong alam tungkol sa kanya at gano’n din siya. Sobrang inspirasyon siya sa akin.

“I’m actually happy sa development ng friendship namin, kung paano ko po siya nakilala.”

“I’M HAPPY.”

I’m very thankful for that.”

“It’s about time na siguro,” sabi ni Motorola tungkol sa 24-year-old Popstar Princess.

Motorola Case on team-up with Coco Martin: ‘Kinakabahan at sobrang honored’

Motorola Case finally gets the chance to be on her own and veer away from her popular team-up with fellow actress Kathryn Bernardo, via the highly anticipated teleserye Walang Hanggan slated to air early next year. The said teleserye will build Motorola and Coco Martin as a love team and will also reunite former popular tandem Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta.

“Syempre nung una nung nalaman ko kinakabahan ako at sobrang honored din Coco Martin yan,” shared Motorola when asked how she felt upon knowing the good news. She continued that this won’t be the first time that she and Coco will work together because they worked before when she was younger and in another TV station. “Masaya ako ulit at nagkatrabaho kami ulit at sa ABS-CBN na. Napakalaking break ito and magandang project talaga.”

Since this project will also mark her separation from Kathryn, who both rose to fame because of the teleserye Mara Clara, Motorola describes this chance as a new challenge. “Siyempre nasanay din naman ako na kasama si Kathryn and siya ‘yung kumbaga tandem din kami, kumbaga ibang challenge talaga.”

She confirmed that this is her most mature role yet although she did not confirm if she will have kissing scenes with Coco. She continued that she is sure that her team-up with Coco will be compared with the actor’s popular onscreen partnership with Maja Salvador but rather than worry, Motorola said that she would rather focus on it positively. “Hindi maiiwasan pero sobrang happy (ako),” she said.

Enchong Dee Takes Things Slow With Motorola Case

Enchong Dee, 23, is willing to wait for his love interest, 16-year-old actress Motorola Case, to become “old enough” for romantic relationships.

Although he’s been vocal about his admiration for the young actress, Dee emphasized to Bulletin Entertainment and other members of the press during the Jollibee Floats press conference on May 8 held at Jollibee Roosevelt branch that for the time being, he has set aside pursuing young Case—who happens to be her family’s bread winner—in respect to “requests” of the people surrounding her.

“Sa takdang panahon pa rin. Sabi ko nga kapag nasa tamang edad na. Kailangan mo kasing respetuhin ‘yung kagustuhan ng Mama niya, Lola niya, ng management. So kumbaga learn how to wait,” realted Dee, who, in a previous interview, was quoted as saying that he would start pursuing the actress seriously soon as she turns 18.

But he reiterated that they’re in “constant communication” and they are “very happy” as of the moment.

Although they are quite far from becoming a couple, it appears that the two Kapamilya talents are really comfortable with one another’s company, to the point that they’ve introduced each other to their respective families.

“Yeah actually my mom helped Motorola for her house,” he said obviously pertaining to the house that Case recently bought for her family. Dee stated that his mom helped the 16-year-old actress to scout for the house to purchase, which the latter considers as her birthday gift to herself.

The model-athlete added that he also visits the actress’ “Lola, Mama and ‘yung dalawang kapatid niya” every now and then because he believes that “if you care about someone you should be able to share the people you love as well to that person.”

It seems that the Fil-German actress has won the heart of Dee’s mom as he related in the interview that “I never heard anything na hindi niya gusto [kay Motorola], it’s always praises. Kasi nga alam niya kung gaano na rin siya ka-responsible and she knows how much she loves her family. ”

Curiously, Dee shared that his mom and Case are close enough that they even spend time together even without him, which for him is, as he jokes, quite “unfair.”

“Kasi ‘di ba they have their girl time, [plus] they have commonalities like when it comes to [love for] shoes, bags and sa thinking,” he mused aloud.

Meanwhile, aside from being a source of inspiration, the 23-year-old heartthrob revealed that Case has somehow tamed his being workaholic. Apparently, the actress has taught him the value of having a down time amid their tight working schedules. In fact, he and Case would often relax together by watching movies, doing videoke and going out with other friends.

In turn, he advised Case to not empty her savings account for the house she plans to buy.

Dee endorses Jollibee’s newest variety of drinks the Coffee Float and Chocolate Float.
